Board & Train

Real-World Training. Personalized Care. Lasting Results.

Colorado K9 Company’s Board and Train program provides your dog with structured, individualized training while living in a home environment with an experienced professional trainer.

Unlike programs where dogs spend most of the day in a kennel, our Board and Train dogs are incorporated into daily life. Each dog receives several hours of hands-on training, exercise, enrichment, socialization, and real-world exposure every day.

Our goal is not simply to teach commands. We work to develop a calmer, more confident, and responsive dog while giving owners the tools needed to maintain that progress at home.

A Home-Based Training Experience

Dogs enrolled in our Board and Train program stay in the trainer’s home rather than a traditional boarding facility.

This allows training to take place throughout the day in realistic situations, including:

  • Entering and exiting doors calmly
  • Settling inside the home
  • Walking through neighborhoods
  • Riding safely in vehicles
  • Practicing around household distractions
  • Visiting dog-friendly businesses and public locations
  • Building appropriate social skills
  • Learning boundaries and routines

Each dog receives more than six hours of daily interaction through structured training sessions, supervised exercise, enrichment activities, social exposure, and everyday household routines.

Skills We Address

Every Board and Train program is customized to the individual dog and the owner’s goals. Training includes obedience, home manners, leash skills, confidence building, and socialization:

  • Name recognition and engagement
  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Place
  • Come when called
  • Leave it
  • Heel and loose-leash walking
  • Waiting at doors
  • Reducing jumping
  • Calm greetings
  • Settling around family members
  • Respecting household boundaries
  • Crate training
  • Appropriate behavior around food
  • Reducing unwanted attention-seeking behaviors

Customized Training

There is no one-size-fits-all training plan.

Before the program begins, we evaluate your dog’s temperament, current behavior, training history, and daily routine. We also discuss your goals and the challenges you are experiencing at home.

This information allows us to create a training plan based on your dog’s specific needs.

Throughout the program, training may be adjusted as your dog progresses. Some dogs need greater emphasis on confidence-building, while others need structure, boundaries, impulse control, or increased exposure to distractions.

Behavior Modification:

Depending on the dog and the severity of the behavior, training may also address:

  • Leash reactivity
  • Fearful behavior
  • Resource guarding
  • Excessive barking
  • Impulse-control concerns
  • Overexcitement
  • Mild separation-related behaviors
  • Protective or territorial behavior

Behavior modification cases require an evaluation before enrollment. Training outcomes depend on the dog’s history, temperament, environment, and owner participation after the program.

Progress Updates

We understand that leaving your dog for training is a significant decision.

Owners receive regular updates throughout the program. These updates may include photos, videos, training notes, and information about the dog’s progress.

Updates are intended to help owners understand what their dog is learning and prepare them to continue the training once the dog returns home.

The Go Home Session

Owner participation is essential to maintaining the results of a Board and Train program.

At the end of the program, owners participate in a detailed go-home session. During this session, we demonstrate the dog’s commands, training equipment, daily structure, and handling techniques.

Owners will practice working with their dog under the trainer’s guidance and learn how to:

  • Give commands clearly
  • Reinforce desired behavior
  • Correct unwanted behavior appropriately
  • Use training equipment safely
  • Maintain household rules
  • Continue building reliability
  • Prevent old habits from returning

Training does not end when your dog comes home. Consistency from every member of the household is necessary for lasting success.

Owner Responsibilities

Board and Train provides dogs with a strong training foundation, but long-term results depend on the owner’s willingness to maintain the program.

Owners must be prepared to:

  • Follow the recommended training structure
  • Practice commands regularly
  • Maintain consistent household expectations
  • Use equipment as instructed
  • Provide appropriate exercise and enrichment
  • Attend the go-home session
  • Communicate concerns during follow-up support

Dogs may return to previous behaviors when training expectations are not consistently maintained.

Health & Enrollment Requirements

Dogs must meet all health and vaccination requirements before entering the program.

Owners may be asked to provide documentation of:

  • Rabies vaccination
  • Distemper and parvovirus vaccination
  • Bordetella vaccination
  • Current flea and tick prevention
  • Current veterinary care
  • Any medications or medical conditions

Dogs showing signs of illness may not be accepted into the program.

Owners must provide accurate information regarding bite history, aggression, medical conditions, anxiety, and previous training. Failure to disclose behavioral or medical information may result in removal from the program.
